Guwahati, Oct 23: Renowned Guwahati-based photographer Himadri Bhuyan captured a stunning image of Comet (C/2025 A6) Lemmon streaking across the night sky over Mawkyrwat in Meghalaya on October 22, 2025.

The brilliant comet, with its glowing green coma and luminous dust tail, illuminated the pollution-free skies of this serene corner of Northeast India, offering a moment of awe and wonder to all who witnessed it.
Discovered earlier in 2025, Comet Lemmon is a long-period visitor to the inner solar system, captivating skywatchers worldwide. From Meghalaya, it appeared low on the western horizon about 50 minutes after sunset under clear autumn skies. Astronomers expect it to remain at its brightest through early November, with a magnitude fluctuating between 4 and 2.5—making it visible to the naked eye in ideal conditions.
“Capturing Comet Lemmon streaking across the night sky above Mawkyrwat was a breathtaking experience,” said photographer Himadri Bhuyan. “Its striking coma and luminous dust tail offered a fleeting, mesmerizing glimpse of a traveler from the distant reaches of our solar system—reminding us of the beauty of pristine night skies and the need to preserve them.”

Astronomers explain that the comet’s vivid green hue is caused by diatomic carbon (C₂) molecules that glow under sunlight as they disintegrate, producing a transient emerald shimmer visible even from Earth.
This remarkable sight not only showcases nature’s celestial beauty but also underscores the importance of protecting dark-sky environments—vital both for astronomical observation and for preserving one of humanity’s most timeless connections with the cosmos.
