Guwahati, Oct 23: A team of students from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati has won the first prize at the 24hourscontest 2025, an international 24-hour animation challenge organized by Toon Boom Animation. The prestigious contest saw participation from 185 institutions across 35 countries, with over 3,800 students competing.
Supervised by Dr. Mriganka Madhukaillya, Assistant Professor, Department of Design, the winning IIT Guwahati team — comprising Arin Bandyopadhyay, Aditya Ravi Pawar, Aseel Pasha, and S. Balasankar — triumphed over 764 teams worldwide.
The theme for this year’s contest, “Flip Your Perspective,” challenged participants to produce a 30-second animated short film within a single day. The IIT Guwahati team’s creative storytelling and technical mastery stood out among hundreds of global entries, earning them top honours.

Congratulating the team, Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director of IIT Guwahati, said
“This achievement reflects the creativity and hard work of our students and faculty. Winning an international competition of this scale is a testament to the world-class talent nurtured at IIT Guwahati.”
The 24hourscontest is renowned for its demanding format, pushing participants to create an entire animation—from storyboarding to final output—within 24 hours. All content must be created from scratch, with no pre-made assets allowed. The use of AI-generated visuals or sound is strictly prohibited, and submissions even one second late face automatic disqualification — underscoring the contest’s professional rigour and emphasis on originality.
This year’s competition was sponsored by major global studios and enterprises including Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar, Sony Pictures Animation, Nickelodeon, Warner Bros. Animation, Bento Box, Netflix, Cartoon Saloon, Illumination, DreamWorks, Wacom, XP-Pen, ASIFA Hollywood, and Toon Boom Animation.
As first-prize winners, the IIT Guwahati students have earned student passes to the Toronto Animation Arts Festival International (TAAFI) 2026, along with professional animation software licenses, studio memberships, and mentorship sessions with Disney animators, among other recognitions.
