Shillong, June 6: In a powerful show of collaboration, traditional healers, religious leaders, Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs), and Village Health Councils (VHCs) came together at Pomlum Primary Health Centre (PHC) to strengthen community-driven healthcare efforts. The one-day training, held on June 5, focused on improving immunisation rates, ensuring safer traditional medical practices, and addressing maternal and child health.

Organised by the District Medical & Health Office (DMHO), East Khasi Hills, the session served as a bridge between traditional and modern health practices, reaffirming that collaboration at the grassroots level is key to better public health outcomes.
Dr. E.L. Khamnutee from the DMCHO highlighted the urgent need for early registration of pregnant mothers, timely immunisation, and reducing maternal and infant mortality rates. She also addressed the integration of traditional medicine into modern healthcare, advocating for safer practices with scientific support.

Dr. D.P. Syiem, Block Medical Officer, and the Public Health Nurse (PHN) at Pomlum PHC emphasised the importance of antenatal check-ups and vaccination, urging influential community leaders to help dispel myths and promote accurate health information.
Dr. R.R. Marak, District Nodal Officer for IDSP and NCDs, stressed the growing burden of non-communicable diseases and offered preventive strategies, ranging from nutrition and physical activity to timely screening. He also addressed community risks such as snake and dog bites, highlighting the need for timely intervention.

Smt. A. Thangkhiew, Block Extension Educator, promoted the use of locally grown organic vegetables to combat anaemia and improve overall nutrition among mothers and children.
Adding a data-driven layer to the dialogue, Mr. Akum Molier from the Tattva Foundation presented a gap analysis of immunisation and community health efforts, urging better coordination among TBAs, religious leaders, and traditional healers to close service delivery gaps.
The meeting reinforced the message that inclusive community engagement is the backbone of a resilient healthcare system, stronger communities in Meghalaya and beyond.
