Shillong, Sept 19: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday welcomed the Women’s Reservation Bill, which was tabled in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

The bill seeks to reserve 33 percent or 1/3rd of seats in Lok Sabha and State Assemblies for women.

Reacting on the development, CM Sangma said he is happy about the bill as he believes in women empowerment and the State, which follows a matrilineal system, already socially empowers women.

“As a matrilineal state and as individual who believes in women empowerment, I am very happy about the bill and I welcome the bill. I am sure that this will lead to a very positive strengthening and representation of women in the Parliament and in the Assemblies,” he said.

“It (Meghalaya) is one of the few states in the country that believes in socially empowering women by means of having matrilineal (system), it is part of our culture. Now as a party we will take an official stand on it; we will be calling a meeting and officially we will take a resolution and pass it,” he further said.

He insisted that as the president of the National People’s Party (NPP) and as an individual, he welcomes the Bill.

Addressing the Parliament on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the day historic and urged the opposition to unanimously pass the Bill, which he termed ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’. With the bill failing to clear the hurdles of Parliament for nearly 3 decades, PM Modi said empowering women through passing the Bill will further empower the democracy.

The Bill, which is the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty Eighth Amendment) Bill, 2023, seeks to introduce three new articles and one new clause in the Constitution. The new clause is 239AA, and the three articles are: 330A, 332A, and 334A.

These amendments will ensure that women have 33 percent reservation in Lok Sabha and State Assemblies in general as well as SC and ST quota.
