Assam’s electricity consumption has almost doubled in a decade and peak demand will cross 3,100 MW this year as it rapidly adds thermal, solar and storage capacity positioning itself at the center of the Northeast’s future energy economy.
Guwahati, May 17: Electricity is quietly emerging as one of Assam’s biggest new growth stories. The state’s average daily electricity consumption has more than doubled from 22.57 million units in 2016-17 to over 43 million units in 2025-26 as per Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL). Peak electricity demand has also shot up to just under 2,950 MW last year and will cross 3,100 MW this year because of industrial, urban and digital infrastructural development in the state.
These figures are indicative of a more significant transformation happening within Assam and across the broader Northeast region. Traditionally the state has been known as a hub of tea, crude oil and natural gas, and electricity consumption never formed the core of conversations on development. All of that is changing as the state is preparing for an increase in industrial demand, development of digital infrastructure and regional growth.
Assam government has already planned a long-term generation and procurement strategy of renewable energy sectors, pumped storage and thermal energy to keep the state “power surplus” in the coming years. The greater context of Northeast India also assumes importance given that electricity demand in the region is expected to rise by nearly 40% by 2031-32 as urbanization, tourism development and industrial expansion continues with greater digital consumption, the region’s energy experts estimate.
Simultaneously, an obvious paradox is starting to appear, given the Northeast has nearly 130GW renewable energy potential as reported in the Northeast India Clean Energy Conclave 2026, the installed renewable energy capacity still remains a fraction of this figure which puts Assam at the epicenter of regional energy development. Officials believe that Assam is in an advantageous position given its location and infrastructure. It already has emerged as the regional center for transport, healthcare, logistics and education through its capital city Guwahati and policymakers now envision the state to emerge as a regional leader in power infrastructure. Electricity is also shaping Assam’s changing economy.

Data centers, AI, cold chain, semiconductors, warehouses, fin-tech and manufacturing centers are heavily dependent on a steady and stable supply of electricity. Investment has been coming from the private sector, the most notable of which are the investment plans by the Adani Group in the thermal and pumped storage sectors.
Rooftop solars has shown slow and steady progress with middle-class urban households adopting the trend in large numbers to reduce escalating electricity bills during summers.
Yet,the dichotomy persists; while the state is setting up massive renewable and storage power plants, it is simultaneously developing more thermal power to support industrial growth and grid stability. Ecological damage resulting from extensive use of rivers, forest and land for thermal power generation is increasingly becoming a concern. Experts now point at the need for the growth in power generation to be matched with improvements in transmission network.
If it’s the road network, bridge development and connectivity in the Northeast in the last several decades, electricity infrastructure will define the region’s growth in the years to come.
