Shillong, May 20: A decomposed body of an unidentified man was discovered early on May 18 near the roadside bushes along National Highway-6 in the Kuliang area of East Jaintia Hills district, Meghalaya.
According to a press release issued by the Superintendent of Police, East Jaintia Hills, the incident came to light when a passenger traveling from Mizoram in a Tata Sumo stopped near the area around 7:00 AM to attend to nature’s call and detected a foul odor coming from the bushes. On inspection, the individual found a body wrapped in a blanket and immediately alerted the Umkiang Police Patrol Post (PPP) personnel, who were regulating traffic nearby.

A police team led by SI P. Phawa visited the site, approximately 8 km away from the Kuliang PPP on NH-6. An inquest was conducted at the spot, but no visible injury marks were found on the body due to its advanced state of decomposition.
Preliminary observations suggest the deceased was a male, approximately 35 to 40 years old, of medium build and fair complexion, around 5’5” tall. He was found wearing a green T-shirt, black trousers, and a white thread tied around his waist, indicating possible Hindu spiritual affiliations.
The body was later shifted to Civil Hospital, Khliehriat, for post-mortem examination and has been kept in the morgue for identification.
Police have appealed to the public to come forward with any information that could help identify the deceased.
