Must read

Tura, March 19: In a concerted effort to restore calm and rebuild trust, a multi-stakeholder delegation on Thursday visited the Gimegre relief camp under Dadenggre Block in West Garo Hills, where around 1,500 displaced persons are currently taking shelter.

The delegation—comprising members of the Tura-based Church Leaders Forum, Mothers’ Union, and the Garo Baptist Convention (ABDK)—undertook the visit amid ongoing concerns over community tensions in the region. The team departed from the Chandmari Krima Office under police escort following a prayer led by Rev. Frithing D. Sangma, and was received en route at Sadolpara Baptist Church.

At the relief camp, the delegation interacted with displaced families, heard their grievances, and expressed solidarity. Relief materials were also handed over to the camp authorities to support those affected.

A key highlight of the visit was a peace meeting attended by nearly 75 participants, including community leaders, members of the Mothers’ Union, Gaonburas from the Muslim community, and local officials. The meeting was led by ADC Pittingson R. Sangma and Demdema BDO Dr Rikrak N. Marak.
Speakers underscored that restoring peace remains the foremost priority, urging communities to reject rumours and misinformation that could further inflame tensions.

Calls for forgiveness, reconciliation, and unity dominated the discussions, with participants resolving to replicate such peace-building meetings in other affected areas with active grassroots involvement.
The deliberations also highlighted the importance of respecting the rights and aspirations of indigenous communities, while stressing that justice must underpin any lasting peace process.

The programme, which began and concluded with prayers, reflected a collective commitment to harmony. The visit ended with a renewed resolve among stakeholders to translate dialogue into sustained action on the ground.
