Shillong, June 9: In a dramatic twist in the Indore honeymoon murder case, Sonam, the wife of the deceased Raja Raghuvanshi, surrendered at the Nandganj Police Station in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, on Sunday. Her surrender follows the arrest of three accused — two from Indore and one from Uttar Pradesh — in connection with the case.
The incident has shocked Meghalaya, a state known for its peace and hospitality, especially in the tourist hotspots of Sohra and Nongriat. Multiple theories had been circulating, ranging from human trafficking to involvement of local elements. However, locals and state authorities alike strongly denied such narratives, insisting that such incidents were unprecedented in the region.
Meghalaya Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh had earlier urged national media houses to refrain from misreporting and misrepresenting the state, cautioning against sensationalism that could damage Meghalaya’s image as a safe tourist destination.
Raja and Sonam, a newlywed couple from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, arrived in Shillong on May 21 for their honeymoon. On May 22, they travelled to Sohra (Cherrapunji), and the next day ventured on a trek to Nongriat, home to the famous double-decker living root bridge. Communication with the family was lost after May 23.
The family of Raja filed a missing person complaint, and a massive search operation was launched. However, the region’s difficult terrain, including steep valleys and dense forest trails, posed serious challenges. Despite this, the search teams—comprising Meghalaya Police, disaster response forces, and volunteers—managed to locate Raja’s decomposed body on June 2.
Tensions escalated during the search operation, with both families of Raja and Sonam present in Shillong. While Raja’s family demanded a CBI probe, alleging slow progress by the Meghalaya Police, Sonam’s family questioned the authorities’ assumption that she was dead. In one instance, Sonam’s brother even asked, “Why is Meghalaya Police assuming that Sonam is dead?”
Sonam’s surrender and the arrests of the three accused have now brought a significant breakthrough in the investigation. While police have not officially disclosed the motive yet, her surrender raises suspicions about her involvement in the alleged murder plot.
The Meghalaya Police, under intense pressure, have demonstrated their investigative capability by tracking the suspects across states and piecing together the complex case.
A senior police official commented, “In a sensitive investigation, it’s not always possible to share every detail with the media or the families. Patience is key.”
Meghalaya Home Minister Prestone Tynsong is expected to address the media this afternoon and officially announce the details of the breakthrough.
