Imphal, Nov 8: Internally displaced persons living in the prefabricated housing complex at Sajiwa in Imphal East are facing severe hardships, saying the meagre daily allowance provided by the government is ‘inadequate’.
Four hundred and forty-six internally displaced persons (IDPs) living in the housing complex at Sajiwa in Imphal East have returned Rs 11,74,320 to the authorities — rejecting the state government’s daily allowance of ₹84 per person.
The displaced families, who have been living in relief camps since ethnic violence broke out in Manipur on May 3, 2023, marched to the Sub-Divisional Office (SDO) in Imphal East to return the amount, calling the allowance “insulting” and “inadequate.”
“We urged the government to help us return to our village. We can work to sustain ourselves, but Rs 84 a day is not enough for even basic needs,” a young woman from the camp told Hub News.
She said that despite government promises of rehabilitation, they have remained in temporary shelters for over three years. “We were told we would be taken back, but when? We live in cramped two-room units for a family of five. We are struggling,” she said, adding that if the government cannot facilitate their return, it should at least increase the daily allowance.
According to reports, the returned sum represents one month’s financial aid distributed through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system — Rs 2,520 per person (Rs 84 per day for 30 days).
The state government had earlier announced that the rehabilitation of more than 60,000 displaced persons would be completed by December in a phased manner. However, camp residents allege that “no visible progress” has been made so far.
