Guwahati, Nov 3: Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jyotiraditya Scindia on Sunday laid the foundation stone for ₹635 crore worth of transformative development projects at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, marking a major push toward infrastructure, education, and innovation in Assam.
The projects, aimed at propelling Assam into a new era of growth and connectivity under the vision of Viksit Purvottar, include:
1.Infrastructure development of 65 new secondary school buildings across Assam – ₹455 crore
2. Upgradation of Chayagaon–Ukium Road – ₹102.69 crore
3.Construction of RCC Bridge at Silonijan–Dhansiri Par Ghat – ₹20.59 crore
4.Development of Industrial Estate at Ramphalbil (Kokrajhar) – ₹14.40 crore
5.Development of Industrial Estate at Lakhibazar (Baksa) – ₹18.40 crore
A key highlight of the event was the launch of the North Eastern Science & Technology (NEST) Cluster at IIT Guwahati, established with an investment of Rs 22.98 crore. The initiative is designed to make Assam a hub of innovation in the Northeast, focusing on grassroots innovation, semiconductors and AI, bamboo-based technologies, and biodegradable plastics.
Speaking at the launch, Scindia said the NEST Cluster would “transform the local wisdom of the Northeast into global solutions” and empower youth to drive India’s technological future.
The minister said the new projects would “serve as the beating heart of the region’s innovation ecosystem — where ideas take shape, technology meets talent, and young minds turn vision into value.”
