Dorbar Shnong stops roadside stall setup at Umiam viewpoint, citing court order violation

Must read

Shillong, Feb 12: Despite regulations set by the Dorbar Shnong, multiple vendors defied the prohibition and forcefully erected roadside stalls at the Umiam viewpoint in Mawiongrim Mawlai on Monday.

Umiam viewpoint is a popular tourist location in Ri-Bhoi district.

Without permission, approximately 5 to 6 vendors, including tea stalls, chips, and juice stalls, and fruit vendors, set up their stalls in the area, despite being prohibited by the local Dorbar.

Upon receiving this information, the Rangbah Shnong (Headman) of Mawiongrim, Sorbar L Nongpiur, intervened at the viewpoint to stop the vendors from opening their stalls. This intervention led to a heated argument between Dorbar Shnong members and the vendors, requiring intervention by the Mawlai Police.

According to the Dorbar Shnong, the prohibition on vendors setting up stalls in the viewpoint area is due to unhygienic waste disposal from the stalls and numerous complaints from the area.

Additionally, the Dorbar Shnong stated that these vendors not only set up their stalls in prohibited areas designated by the Dorbar but also contravene an order from the Meghalaya High Court prohibiting stall setups in the Umiam viewpoint area.

It may be noted, that the office of the East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner on October 17, 2023, has issued an order under Section 144 CrPC prohibiting the throwing of garbage/trash and effluent discharge directly into Umiam Lake or which may lead to the lake from all its adjacent areas falling under the district.

The order notes that there is indiscriminate throwing of garbage directly into the lake by travelers, revelers, and shopkeepers, etc., and there are also instances of trash flowing into the lake from the areas adjacent to it falling under East Khasi Hills.

The Umiam Viewpoint in which the Vendors are planning to set up on Monday still falls under the East Khasi Hills jurisdiction.
