East Garo Hills DTO arrested by Assam Police for involvement in vehicle document forgery racket

Agia, May 14: Assam’s Goalpara Police arrested Meghalaya’s East Garo Hills District Transport Officer on Sunday on allegations of being part of a racket doing falsification of vehicle documents.

Circle Inspector Siraj Ingti and Manimoy Tamuly, Officer in charge of the Agia Police Station led a police team that went to East Garo Hills DTO office at Williamnagar and arrested the District Transport Officer (DTO) Genekelly G. Momin.

“A strong nexus has running a business of false documentations of various kinds of vehicles, which are basically failed of registration and the nexus has (been) re-registering the vehicles in Meghalaya by tempering the chassis number and other important things,” said Manimoy Tamuly, OC, Agia Police Station.

“On the basis of a source of information, a man namely, Gulam Ali was arrested after finding his vehicle documents and engine number mismatching on 4th May, 2023. Later two more vehicles were found in the same condition,” added Tamuly.

Later, police registered a case in Agia Police Station under sections 120B/379/411/471/468/420 and started investigation. During the investigation police found the evidence against the East Garo HIlls DTO and he was arrested on Sunday. Police has already sent Gulam Ali and his driver to judicial custody.

Goalpara Superintendent of Police V. V. Rakesh Reddy P. said, “During the interrogation with Gulam Ali, he stated that with the help of the East Garo Hills DTO they do this kind of thing. We are investigating the matter and (so far) we found three vehicles and five registration cards from his possession and we have already seized them.”

Reddy said the DTO office recently had a fire incident. “So we have to investigate whether the incident was part of the conspiracy or not, including how many documents were burned in the incident and more will be arrested after the investigations,” he said.

SP Reddy also thanked the Meghalaya Police for their cooperation during the arrest of the DTO East Garo Hills.

Meanwhile, Tamuly said they have already listed around 30 vehicles with falsified documents, whose engine numbers and other things have been tampered with.
