Shillong, June 26: The East Jaintia Hills District on Thursday observed the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking with a resounding call to combat the growing menace of substance abuse.
The awareness programme, held at Sutnga Elaka Dorbar Hall, was organised by the District Social Welfare Office in collaboration with the Deputy Commissioner’s office and the Hima Sutnga Youth Federation (HSYF).

Sutnga-Saipung MLA and Chairperson of the Committee on Empowerment of Women, Santa Mary Shylla, attended as Chief Guest. Addressing the gathering, she highlighted the alarming rise in drug abuse and praised law enforcement and community groups for their efforts. She urged more such programmes across the district and called on youth, traditional heads, and public leaders to actively join the fight against drugs.
Speaking directly to students, she encouraged them to say no to drugs and to seek support from elders in times of distress. She also appealed for compassion toward victims of addiction, discouraging stigma and discrimination.

Deputy Commissioner Shivansh Awasthi, IAS, highlighted the State’s DREAM Mission, launched under Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, which focuses on prevention, awareness, and rehabilitation. He noted that over 2,500 students were engaged through winter camps in 15 schools last year and that sports infrastructure, including futsal grounds under DMF, is being developed to positively engage youth.
A pledge against drug abuse was led by Superintendent of Police Giri Prasad, and joined by all present. Key contributors to anti-drug efforts, including Dr. J. Nongtdu (Medical Officer, OST) and Smti R. Patlong (Programme Manager, MCSWA), were felicitated for their dedication.
Earlier, Additional SP S. Paslein provided an overview of the NDPS Act, 1985, while Dr. Nongtdu and Smti Patlong spoke on the effects of substance abuse and its link to HIV/AIDS.

The programme also featured skits, a musical performance by students of Syrleiñ Secondary School, and prize distributions for Reels and Hashtag competitions held as part of the campaign.
The event saw participation from students, police, medical professionals, and community leaders—united in the commitment to building a drug-free society.
