Dibrugarh, Jan 9: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has successfully completed the electrification of the strategically important Tinsukia–Dibrugarh and Makum–Ledo rail sections, marking a major milestone in strengthening rail infrastructure across Upper Assam and the Northeast.
Railway officials said the completion of electrification will significantly reduce dependence on diesel locomotives, leading to lower fuel costs and a substantial cut in carbon emissions and noise pollution. The move is expected to promote cleaner, more sustainable rail operations in the region.
“With electric traction now operational, trains on these sections will be able to run at higher speeds with improved acceleration and enhanced reliability. Passengers can expect faster, smoother and more punctual services, while freight movement will become more efficient—supporting regional trade and industrial growth,” a railway official said.
The newly electrified Tinsukia–Dibrugarh and Makum–Ledo sections serve as vital rail links connecting key commercial, industrial and tourism hubs of Assam. Officials noted that electrification will enhance overall network capacity and ensure smoother integration with the national rail grid, enabling seamless movement of both passenger and goods trains.
The project forms part of Indian Railways’ nationwide electrification drive aimed at improving energy efficiency, reducing operational costs and transitioning towards environmentally friendly transport systems.
The railway administration expressed confidence that the electrification of these sections will give a significant boost to rail connectivity in the Northeast and pave the way for the introduction of additional passenger and freight services in the coming years.
