Shillong, Jan 9: In a move that links sustainability with livelihoods, the EIACP Programme Centre–Hub hosted by the State Council of Science Technology and Environment (SCSTE), Meghalaya, in collaboration with the North East Cane and Bamboo Development Council (NECBDC), has launched a full-time certificate course—Micro Entrepreneur (NTFP–Plant Origin): Bamboo Craft—under the Green Skill Development Programme (GSDP) for 2025–26. The programme is fully sponsored by the Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC).
This marks the first time Meghalaya has offered this nationally approved green skill course. The inaugural programme was held on January 9 and was attended by the Managing Director of NECBDC, the ARO In-charge of SCSTE, senior officials, members of the EIACP team, and enrolled participants.
Designed to convert traditional bamboo craftsmanship into viable green enterprises, the course targets unemployed youth, women, school and college dropouts, self-help groups, and grassroots organisations—particularly from rural areas. The initiative aims to nurture a small but highly skilled pool of bamboo-based green entrepreneurs.
The curriculum runs from January 9 to March 23, 2026, blending classroom instruction with hands-on practical training, on-the-job exposure, and employability skills.
“I hope this course will help me improve the quality of my finished products and explore better marketing options,” said one participant. Another trainee added, “With limited opportunities even after graduation, I see this programme as a real chance to become a green entrepreneur.”
On successful completion, participants will receive a certificate from MoEF&CC, offering national recognition and opening pathways for self-employment and green job creation.
Officials said the initiative aligns with India’s broader push for nature-based livelihoods, biodiversity conservation, and the growth of sustainable rural economies.
