Tura, Jan 24: A rogue elephant which entered a village under Garobadha police jurisdiction in search of food early in the morning of Sunday attacked a village elder who had come out of his house to relieve himself killing him on the spot.
According to West Garo Hills police, the incident happened in Koraitola village, near Harigaon bazar of Garobadha at around 6 AM when the village elder, 61 year old Bolendro Koch left his house to go to the toilet nearby. He was spotted by the wild elephant that chased and attacked him trampling him to death on the ground.
The elephant is suspected to be part of a herd that has been moving around the area for the past few days scavenging for food. The elephant seems to have moved away from the herd when it came across the villager and attacked with fatal consequences.
This is the third casualty from an elephant attack in the Garo Hills in the last one year.
Earlier, a villager was trampled to death in Gasuapara region of South Garo Hills while another victim lost his life in the Salmanpara region of South West Garo Hills, several months ago.
