Guwahati, May 31: In a major crackdown on a suspected counterfeit currency network, Lakhimpur police on Friday seized fake currency worth nearly ₹10 lakh in ₹500 denomination from the Bangalmora area. One individual has been arrested in connection with the case.
Acting on a tip-off, a team from Laluk Police Station intercepted a suspicious vehicle near Laluk. The driver reportedly attempted to flee, prompting a high-speed chase before officers managed to halt the vehicle. Upon inspection, they discovered bundles of counterfeit notes hidden inside.

The arrested individual has been identified as Sahidul Islam, a resident of No. 1 Ahmedpur village in Bangalmora. Police suspect he may be part of a larger network involved in printing and circulating fake currency.
“We are investigating the case. So far, one arrest has been made. Efforts are on to trace others involved in this racket,” said a senior police official.
The Bangalmora region, spread across Laluk and Bihpuria police station jurisdictions, has gained notoriety in recent years as a hub for illicit activities involving fake currency and counterfeit gold. Law enforcement sources have indicated that Lakhimpur is among four Assam districts currently under heightened surveillance for such crimes.
Police have intensified operations in the area amid growing concerns over the region’s role in wider illegal trade networks.
