Guwahati, Sept 3: Cachar police on Tuesday arrested a 24-year-old youth for impersonating a doctor and attending to patients at the government-run Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH).
The accused, identified as Mir Hussain Ahmed Barbhuiya of Katigorah near the India-Bangladesh border, was caught inside the Gynaecology OPD where he had allegedly been examining patients since August 29, deceiving both staff and patients.
“Our staff noticed him visiting the ward after 2 pm every day, dressed as a doctor. We informed the police after becoming suspicious. Following his arrest today, we lodged a First Information Report (FIR),” said Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, principal of SMCH.
Barbhuiya was never enrolled as a doctor at the hospital and held no medical qualifications, police confirmed. “The individual had no medical background but was impersonating a gynaecologist at SMCH. He has been apprehended, and lawful action has been initiated,” said Cachar SSP Numal Mahatta.
This marks the second incident of medical fraud in Silchar in less than a month. On August 3, police arrested one Pulak Malakar (43) from Silchar’s Shiv Sundari Nari Sikshashram for allegedly practising as a gynaecologist with a forged MBBS degree purportedly obtained from Odisha.
