Shillong, Nov 8: The Assam Rifles on Saturday announced that the fifth edition of its annual Half Marathon will take place on December 14 in Upper Shillong, Meghalaya, with a prize purse of Rs 20 lakh, making it one of the most lucrative running events in Northeast India.
The announcement was made at a curtain-raiser event held at the Constitution Club of India, New Delhi, where the organisers unveiled the marathon’s official jersey, finisher medal, and route map.
The event—first organised in 2021 to promote fitness, camaraderie, and community engagement—has grown into a major sports celebration in the region. This year’s edition will see over 3,000 participants competing across 5 km, 10 km, and 21 km categories, open to runners aged 12 to 60 and above.
Speaking at the event, Col. Navjot Singh (SM) from HQ DG Assam Rifles said,
“The Assam Rifles Half Marathon has become one of the most-awaited celebrations of running in the North East. We’ve significantly increased the prize purse to Rs 20 lakh to encourage wider participation and to align with our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision for a fitter, healthier India.”
Other dignitaries at the launch included Prashant Kumar (Tata Advanced Systems), travel writer Himanshu Talwar, and Krishna Kant Dubey (Founder & CEO, Innovative Sports & Leisure LLP).
Registration for the marathon is open online at Townscript, with participants set to receive goodie bags, finisher medals, and timing certificates.
The Assam Rifles, India’s oldest paramilitary force established in 1835, organises the event under the Ministry of Home Affairs, reinforcing its role not only in national security but also in promoting wellness and social harmony in the Northeast.
