“No More Overnight Journeys”: Chief Minister inaugurates MPSC office in Tura, bringing exams closer to Garo Hills youth

Must read

Tura, Nov 8: Good news for students from Garo Hills — they will no longer have to travel overnight to Shillong to sit for Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC) examinations.

“Many would arrive tired and go straight to the exam hall without rest. With this new facility, students can now appear for exams and interviews right here in Tura,” said Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, while inaugurating the new MPSC Office at Dakopgre, Tura, on Saturday.

The Chief Minister said the new office would end the long-standing hardship faced by aspirants from the Garo Hills, who earlier had to endure “10 to 15 hours overnight to Shillong” to appear for competitive exams.

Calling it “one of the most important offices to be inaugurated,” Sangma said the new facility marks a significant step toward equitable access and administrative decentralisation. He announced that the first MPSC examination in Tura will be held on November 14, symbolising a new chapter in Meghalaya’s public service recruitment system.

He added that the strenuous travel often affected candidates’ performance, making today’s inauguration “one of the most important milestones” in the state’s efforts to ensure equitable access to opportunities.

“The impact that this office will have on the youth and their future will be immense. It gives me great satisfaction to inaugurate this office today,” the Chief Minister remarked.

Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Thomas A. Sangma, who attended the ceremony, described the inauguration as “a landmark moment that heralds a new era of transparent, accountable, and people-centric governance.”

Among those present were Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills, Vibhor Agarwal, Chairman (Tura), Abraham T. Momin, and senior officials from the Meghalaya Public Service Commission and other government departments.

The new MPSC office in Tura will conduct examinations, interviews, and recruitment activities for candidates from the Garo Hills region, significantly reducing travel burdens and ensuring greater accessibility for Meghalaya’s future public servants.
