Four Assamese expats to testify in Zubeen Garg death case; AASU announces statewide protests demanding justice

Must read

Guwahati, Oct 12: Four more Assamese expatriates are set to arrive in Guwahati from Singapore today to testify before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the mysterious death of singer Zubeen Garg.

Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma has warned the remaining six individuals connected to the case to appear soon or face strict legal action.

The four expatriates identified as Tanmay Phukan, Abhimanyu Talukdar, Debojit Hazarika, and Sushmita Goswami will be questioned by the SIT regarding the circumstances surrounding the singer’s untimely death. Rupkamal Kalita, another individual linked to the case, had already appeared before the CID and was interrogated last week. Officials believe the forthcoming testimonies may provide crucial leads to unravel the sequence of events that led to the tragedy.

On Friday, the Central Forensic Science Laboratory had submitted the viscera sample report to CID, who had then forwarded it to the Guwahati Medical College Hospital (where the second post-mortem was conducted by a team of experts) to prepare the complete report of the post-mortem.

“Following submission of the report of viscera sample tests by CFSL, Delhi, to Assam Police on Friday, a specific direction has emerged in the investigation into Zubeen’s death,” Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said during a Facebook Live.

“I believe, within a few days, the entire chronology of events related to the death will be submitted in court. We are a lot more confident now that the pace of investigation into the case is going in an expected direction,” he added.

“Now, only six more Assamese NRIs remain to join the probe. I would urge the remaining six one more time to join the investigation, as it is their legal and moral responsibility. You will have to come to Assam and help the probe. If you don’t come on their own, we will not hesitate to take legal steps,” said Sarma.

“Once their statements are recorded, the CID will be able to give all details to the court. After getting the CFSL report on viscera samples, the process of giving justice to the Gargs will move at a fast pace. I am confident that my earlier promise to you about giving justice to Zubeen would be fulfilled,” he added.

AASU STATEWIDE PROTESTS

Meanwhile, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has announced a series of statewide protests seeking justice for the late artist, who was widely regarded as Assam’s cultural icon. The organisation has scheduled three major events: a sit-in protest on October 14, a candlelight vigil on October 19, and a symbolic “Nyay Samdal” (Justice March) across all district headquarters on October 23.

According to AASU, the October 14 sit-in will take place in public areas of every district headquarters, while the October 19 candlelight vigil will see students and citizens pay tribute to Zubeen Garg across the state. The October 23 “Nyay Samdal” will be a coordinated demonstration to highlight the demand for a fair and transparent investigation.

In a joint statement, AASU President Utpal Sharma and General Secretary Samiran Phukan reiterated four key demands:

Justice must be delivered to Zubeen Garg.

The investigation into his death must be swift, impartial, and conclusive.

All those found guilty must face exemplary punishment.

The government must prepare a strong chargesheet supported by solid evidence to ensure the culprits cannot evade justice.

The AASU leaders criticised the handling of the investigation, alleging lapses by members associated with Zubeen Garg’s care in Singapore and certain individuals from the Assam Association there. They claimed these failures contributed to “a serious and irreversible crime” and demanded full transparency from the government.

Expressing concern over delays in bringing back key witnesses from Singapore, the AASU questioned the government’s efficiency and urged immediate diplomatic and legal measures, including the revocation of passports for those obstructing the probe.

While maintaining that Garg’s personal assets are a private matter, AASU clarified that all of his movable, immovable, and intellectual properties rightfully belong to his wife, Garima Garg, and family.

“The people of Assam and AASU will not rest until justice is delivered to singer Zubeen Garg,” the statement said.
