Guwahati, July 11: In a crackdown against quackery, four individuals posing as doctors were arrested from various locations in Assam over the last 72 hours for endangering public health and betraying public trust.
According to the police, they were booked under charges of criminal breach of trust, cheating, and endangering public safety as per the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and relevant sections of the National Medical Commission (NMC) Act, 2019.
“One fake doctor is currently absconding, and a manhunt is underway to apprehend him. While two arrests were made in Nagaon on Tuesday, two more were apprehended in Jorhat on Wednesday after FIRs were lodged by Dr. Abhijit Neog, Anti-Quackery and Vigilance Officer of the Assam government,” said an official.
Since the establishment of the anti-quackery and vigilance cell in January 2025, ten fake doctors have been apprehended across the state.
Of the 13 FIRs filed by the unit so far, ten individuals have been arrested, one remains at large, and two cases are under investigation.
The unit had received credible information about individuals practicing medicine with unrecognised qualifications in the districts of Nagaon, Hojai, and Jorhat.
“We conducted our own investigation first and scrutinised the documents and qualifications of these individuals. Most of them lacked legitimate medical qualifications. Some produced fake MBBS certificates, while others had degrees in unrecognised alternative medicine streams,” said an official.
He added, “After gathering sufficient evidence, FIRs were registered with the local police. While one suspect from Doboka in Hojai district is still absconding, the others have been apprehended. Bimal Sutradhar from Juria and Pankaj Das from Seconee Tea Estate in Nagaon were arrested on Tuesday. AK Gogoi and Amarjyoti Nath were arrested in Jorhat on Wednesday.”
