Tura, April 24: A remote village in Meghalaya’s Garo Hills has emerged as a national model for rural water management, with the state government showcasing its success as a blueprint for water security across the region.

At a felicitation programme titled Jal Gaurav Saman held at Asanang Playground under Rongram Block on Friday, the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department honoured Jendragre village for achieving 100% tap water connectivity and sustainable water management under the Jal Jeevan Mission.

Jendragre, which was among just 10 villages from Meghalaya selected through the Centre’s “Jal Mahotsav” assessment, was recognised for combining community participation with scientific practices such as regular water quality monitoring using field testing kits.

PHE Minister Marcuise N. Marak, who attended the event as chief guest, presented a certificate and ₹50,000 cash award to village leaders. He said the achievement highlights how community-led efforts can ensure long-term water security, particularly in rural and hilly regions.

“Jendragre’s success is not just an achievement but a model for other villages in Garo Hills and beyond,” Marak said, urging engineers and local bodies to sustain the momentum.
Chief Engineer R.S. Nongbri described the recognition—conferred at the national level—as a matter of pride for Meghalaya, crediting both local communities and technical teams for swift implementation.

The department also honoured five other villages—Sasatgre, Chandigre, Chandragre, Darichekgre and Aigre Apal—for maintaining water infrastructure and promoting efficient usage.

Officials said the Jal Jeevan Mission has significantly reduced water scarcity in these areas, with several villages now reporting reliable household tap connections for the first time.
The event also featured cultural performances, including a traditional Wangala dance, and a live demonstration on water quality testing by Jendragre residents, showcasing how community ownership has been central to the programme’s success.
