Shillong, Apr 24: In a push to strengthen horticulture and rural livelihoods in Meghalaya, the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Community and Skill Development Centre (DDUCC) under North-Eastern Hill University conducted a capacity-building programme for farmers in Laskein Block of West Jaintia Hills district.
Organised in collaboration with ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, the training—titled “Skill Enhancement for Horticultural Development and Sustainability for Farmers of NEH Region”—saw participation from around 250 farmers, many of them women.
The programme focused on upgrading skills in modern horticultural practices, with an emphasis on crops linked to health and wellness and income generation. Technical sessions were led by agronomy specialist Risakaru Lyngdoh from KVK Wahiajer, with farmers engaging in interactive discussions on improving productivity and adopting sustainable methods.
Speaking at the valedictory function, MLA Nujorki Sungoh urged farmers to apply the knowledge gained to move towards entrepreneurship and self-reliance. He highlighted the role of such training programmes in creating livelihood opportunities and addressing rural employment challenges.

Pro Vice Chancellor of NEHU, Prof. S. Umdor, stressed the central role of farming in the region’s economy and encouraged participants to tap into government schemes and subsidies to expand their activities. He also signalled continued collaboration with ICAR-IIHR and other agencies to support farmers in the Northeast.
The event was attended by local representatives, officials, and community leaders, including MDC Wormanship Shadap and village headman Shaniah Lamare.
The programme concluded with the distribution of horticultural inputs and seedlings to all participating farmers, aimed at enabling immediate on-ground application of the training.
