Tura, Sept 4: For weightlifters in West Garo Hills, the dream of training in a dedicated facility has taken a major step forward with the inauguration of a new hall at A’ba Nok, Dakopgre, Tura. The West Garo Hills Weightlifting Association (WGHWA), with support from the Meghalaya State Weightlifting Association giving local athletes fresh hope ahead of the 2026 National Games.

The facility inaugurated earlier this week, which comes with an additional 130 kgs of new equipment alongside the 80 kgs already provided earlier, is expected to benefit the growing pool of young weightlifters in the district. Many of them have already shown promise by winning medals in the Meghalaya Games and State Championships, and now see the upgraded infrastructure as a stepping stone to the national stage.
District Sports Officer Saljagring M. Marak, who graced the inauguration as the special guest, encouraged the athletes to make full use of the facility and to train with determination as Meghalaya gears up to host the National Games for the first time in 2026.

The WGHWA has pledged to nurture local talent further and is planning to raise funds through a lucky draw event, now rescheduled to November 15, to support its activities.
For the weightlifters of Garo Hills, the hall represents more than just a training space—it is an opportunity to sharpen their skills, dream bigger, and prepare to showcase their strength on one of the biggest sporting stages in India.
