Guwahati, May 26: The Gauhati High Court on Monday granted bail to former All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) general secretary Shankar Jyoti Baruah, who was recently arrested in connection with a controversial altercation at the B.N. Singh petrol depot in Duliajan, Dibrugarh district.
Baruah’s arrest followed an alleged physical confrontation at the fuel station—an incident that quickly snowballed into a politically sensitive matter, sparking widespread reactions across Assam.
Several organisations, including the Bir Lachit Sena Assam, strongly opposed Baruah’s detention. Bir Lachit Sena leader Shrinkhal Chaliha condemned the arrest, calling it a “deliberate targeting of indigenous individuals.”
Supporters of Baruah have welcomed the court’s decision, viewing it as a necessary correction to what they allege was a disproportionate response. His arrest has triggered public outcry, particularly among indigenous rights groups, who have staged protests demanding his immediate release.
