Guwahati, July 4: Raijor Dal president and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi has demanded the immediate dismissal of Assam Tourism Minister Jayanta Malla Barua, alleging large-scale corruption in what he termed the “Gir Cow Scam.” Gogoi compared the case to the infamous Bihar fodder scam and warned of statewide protests if action is not taken.
Addressing the media in Guwahati on Friday, Gogoi claimed that around 300 Gir cows were procured from Gujarat for a government farm in Assam, but the cattle delivered were allegedly not genuine Gir breed cows, indicating a major fraud during the procurement process.

“This is not a cheap scam. It’s on the scale of the Lalu Prasad Yadav fodder scam,” Gogoi said. “The cows brought in were not even Gir cows. This is a clear cut case of corruption rooted deep within the system.”
According to Gogoi, around 90 cows reportedly went missing at Rangia railway station during transportation, while 60 cows were allegedly diverted to Minister Jayanta Malla Barua’s private farmhouse. He also alleged that other MLAs and MPs had taken possession of the cattle meant for the state farm.
The MLA further accused Barua of encroaching on 1 to 5 acres of government land, claiming the minister had illegally occupied the land while thousands of poor and marginalized families are being evicted in eviction drives across the state.
“This is not just financial misappropriation — it’s moral bankruptcy,” Gogoi said. “If the minister is not removed, we will take to the streets. A high-level probe must be initiated immediately into both the cow procurement and the minister’s property.”
