Guwahati, Feb 26: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma suggested that Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi should have been assigned to an “India-Pakistan” group instead of being named president of the India–Philippines Parliamentary Friendship Group.
On Monday, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla constituted Parliamentary Friendship Groups with more than 60 countries, comprising members from across parties. Gaurav Gogoi was appointed president of the India–Philippines Parliamentary Friendship Group.
Reacting to the development, Sarma on Wednesday told media persons that Gogoi would have been more suited to an “India-Pakistan” group — an apparent reference to his earlier allegation branding the Congress leader a “Pakistani agent,” a charge Gogoi has strongly denied.
Responding to the Chief Minister’s remarks, Gogoi questioned their relevance, pointing out that his appointment was made by the Speaker of the Lok Sabha and not by the Assam government.
“What role does the Chief Minister have in this matter? What is the value of his remarks? Once the Speaker of the Lok Sabha has assigned a responsibility within the House, I do not understand the relevance of comments made by Sarma,” Gogoi said.
The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee also defended its state president, stating that his nomination to head the India–Philippines Parliamentary Friendship Group comes at a time when the Chief Minister is allegedly running a “malicious campaign” against him — an allegation Sarma has dismissed.
