Guwahati, Feb 26: Mankachar Police arrested two persons and seized 26.994 kg of suspected marijuana (ganja) during a late-night operation near Jhanjhani under Mankachar Police Station, close to the Indo-Bangladesh border and Meghalaya.
The accused have been identified as Nazurul Islam (55) and Hashiur Miah (21), both residents of Sotimari under Mankachar Police Station.
A police official said that based on credible source information about a large consignment of suspected psychotropic substances concealed at Sotimari near Jhanjhani, a search operation was launched at around 11:30 pm on February 25.
“During the operation, two persons were apprehended and 26.994 kg of suspected marijuana was recovered from their possession,” the official said.
Marijuana consists of the dried flowers, leaves, stems, and seeds of the cannabis plant. The main chemical that causes its “high” is THC (tetrahydrocannabinol).
The estimated market value of the seized contraband is Rs 13,49,700. The seized items were documented as per the seizure list in the presence of independent witnesses using the e-Sakshya app.
Both accused were brought to the police station along with the recovered contraband for necessary legal action. A case has been registered against them under the NDPS Act.
