Shillong, Feb 8: Fuel prices have been hitting new highs; the Meghalaya government on Sunday announced a reduction of petrol and diesel prices in the state by Rs 2 per litre.

“In view of the recent price hike in petrol and diesel in Meghalaya, the State Government has decided that the rate for both petrol and diesel will be reduced by 2 rupees per litre, effective from midnight of 8th February 2021,” Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said in a tweet.

The decision was taken in a review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on the situation of the increased prices of petrol and diesel in the state, where the Government has decided to offer a rebate of Rs 2 per litre from the tax component of the retail sale Price of Petrol Diesel, effective from midnight of 8th February in order to maintain the price differential with neighbouring Assam and offer relief to the consumer within the state.

Addressing after the review meeting, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said, “We had had a VC meeting with the concern officers including the chief secretary and taking into consideration the issue of the issue of the abnormal hike in prices of diesel and petrol, then the Government has decided that the price of diesel and petrol will be reduced to Rs 2 with effect from 8th Midnight, Monday midnight notification will go,”

Infact, Petrol and diesel prices have reached their record level across the country while the prices of fuel in Meghalaya were a little higher than neighbouring Assam.

The ongoing indefinite strike called by the Joint Action Committee of Commercial Vehicles demanding a reduction in tax rates and revision of taxi fares took a heavy toll on the state, particularly Shillong. The twin demands by the committee members come in the wake of the steep rise in fuel prices of late.

Appealing to the agitating Commercial transporters, Tynsong said, “This decision taken under the chairmanship of our honourable Chief Minister comparing the price that has increased in Meghalaya with is even little higher than Assam, so this decision was taken on Sunday I would like to request all the concern stakeholders to cooperate with the Government and those indefinite strike called by the joint action committee we would request them to suspend it immediately.”

The strike crippled normal life as commuters hinging on public transport were left stranded in different parts of the city.
