Dibrugarh, May 6: An active cadre of ULFA-I was arrested along with a cache of arms and ammunition from Palengi under Demow Police Station in Assam’s Sivasagar district on Wednesday.
The arrested militant has been identified as Biren Chetia alias Rontu Asom.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs, a police team led by Sivasagar Senior Superintendent of Police Papori Chetia conducted a raid at a residence in Dhyanpathar village in Palengi, where the ULFA-I operative was reportedly hiding.
According to police, Rontu Asom had recently entered Assam from a ULFA-I camp in Myanmar with plans to carry out subversive activities.
Investigators have also linked the arrested militant to a deadly grenade blast in Demow several years ago that had claimed one life.
Sources said the apprehended cadre, a resident of Moran Bezpathar, is currently being interrogated at Demow Police Station as security agencies continue their investigation and search for further leads.
“Based on specific intelligence, our Sivasagar Police team launched a crackdown and arrested the ULFA-I cadre from Palengi under the Demow area of Sivasagar. We recovered eight hand grenades, one bottle grenade, one 9 mm pistol, 10 live rounds of ammunition, Rs 13,500 in cash, and several incriminating documents from his possession,” SSP Papori Chetia said.
She further added, “The ULFA-I cadre had come to the Palengi area to hand over the grenades and other ammunition to someone. The arrest was made on the basis of specific intelligence inputs.”
Sources added that the arrested militant was a Myanmar-trained hardcore ULFA-I cadre.
