Shillong, OCT 15: Minister in-charge Health and Family Welfare Wailadmiki Shylla on Wednesday launched the National Health Mission Sports Meet at the Nongkseh Football Turf, Upper Shillong.
The multi-day event is being held under the theme “Wellness through Sports, Service through Health”, emphasising on the importance of physical wellbeing for healthcare professionals.
In his keynote address, Shylla expressed his appreciation and congratulated the NHM employees for organizing the sports meet. He conveyed his pride in their teamwork & dedication and said “As employees in the health department, we always encourage and urge the people to have a healthy living and a healthy lifestyle. Today you have shown, we do what we preach.”

He also commended the staff for promoting health and fitness through their actions and urged all the healthcare workers to stay strong and undeterred, assuring them that their dedication and service are well recognized by the Government.
Carol Iangrai, Joint Director of Health Services, emphasised on the importance of the event and said, “This gathering is a wonderful reminder that health is not just the absence of illness, but a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being.” She lauded the efforts of NHM for a tremendous job in strengthening and transforming the healthcare delivery in the State as well as in the country.
Addressing the rising challenges of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), she said, “Sports teaches us discipline, consistency, resilience, and teamwork, which we require to change our lifestyle”.
She highlighted that regular exercise and sports help reduce these risks and crucial for prevention.

Addressing the gathering, M. Thangkhiew, Headman Raid Sawkur Nongkseh extended his regards to the attendees and invited them to enjoy the “beautiful and scenic beauty” of what he described as a “historical place”. Aligning with the theme of the event, he added, “All work and no play make Jack a dull boy” corresponding to the principle of a “healthy mind and body.” He also highlighted with around 1500 households and 7,000 people, the locality continues to look forward for enhanced health facilities.
Edison Khymdeit, Sports Organising Member cum President DEC, NEAM, EKH, delivered the vote of thanks.

The sports meet aims to foster teamwork, camaraderie, and a culture of fitness among all. The various sporting events will be held from the 15th to the 17th of October.
