SHILLONG, JAN 15: Health Minister Wailadmiki Shylla has rejected the demand to split health department projects into smaller packages, citing manpower constraints.
“The health department does not have enough manpower, like PWD or PHE or any other engineering department,” Shylla said.
Speaking to media persons on Wednesday, Shylla explained that splitting projects into smaller packages would make it difficult for engineers to monitor the work.
“If most of the work is split into smaller packages, it will be difficult for the engineers, junior engineers to monitor the work,” he said.
The All Meghalaya Contractor and Supplier Association (AMCSA) had demanded that projects be split to allow local contractors to participate in the bidding process. AMCSA alleged that clubbing projects together has left out local contractors, benefiting only a few.
“We are not able to compete… the mediocre and petty contractors are being left out,” AMCSA said in a memorandum to the minister.
The association claimed the government is depriving local contractors of opportunities.
Shylla assured that the department would recruit more staff to address manpower issues.
