Heavy rains devastate Meghalaya: State Govt seeks Rs 300 cr assistance from Centre

Shillong, June 19: Meghalaya Government is seeking around Rs 300 crore assistance from the Centre in view of the devastation caused by flash floods and landslides across the state due to heavy rains.

This was informed by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma after holding a review meeting with the Deputy Commissioner and officials of various departments on Sunday afternoon at DC office in Khliehriat, East Jaintia Hills to assess the damages caused in the District in the past few days. In the meeting, he instructed the departments to work collective to take necessary actions to restore the roads and ensure supply of essential commodities.


He also shared that the preliminary assessment report prepared by the government has estimated the damages due to heavy rains at around Rs. 300 crores.

He said the government has written to the Ministry of Home Affairs, apprising it of the damages and sought release of the assistance amount to carry out restoration works and rescue and rehabilitation operations.

“The rain has been unprecedented, in some areas, it has broken records of the past 40 years. This is real heavy rain, which was not expected. Major roads in highways and important roads in rural areas, bridges have been damaged in the rains. There has been a huge impact as far as damages is concerned and the financial implication will be very high. There has been a huge impact for the livelihood of the people as well, including damages to livestock, farming activities across the State,” the Chief Minister asserted.

He said that the Government will take some time to assess the extent of damages. He further informed that Union Home Minister Amit Shah has been apprised of the situation.

“We have taken steps to assess the damages but it will take some time. The Government of India will also be sending a team to assess the damages,” he added.
