Shillong, Apr 27: The Hid Foundation, Shillong has urged Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma to intervene with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to ensure the inclusion of the Khasi language in the CBSE curriculum.
In a press note issued on April 27, the organisation also requested the Government of Meghalaya to take up the matter with the Ministry of Education to facilitate the inclusion of Khasi in the national school board’s syllabus.
The foundation said the demand assumes greater significance following the state government’s decision to recognise Khasi and Garo alongside English as official languages for government documentation in Meghalaya.
According to the organisation, the government must move beyond announcements and take concrete steps to strengthen the use of Khasi in the education sector.
Among its key demands, the Hid Foundation called for the introduction of Khasi in education at all levels and urged the government to ensure that students are given the option to appear for competitive examinations in the language.
It also emphasised the need for the immediate inclusion of Khasi in the CBSE syllabus so that students studying in CBSE-affiliated schools in Meghalaya can study the language as part of their curriculum.
The organisation stated that without such measures, the recognition of Khasi as an official language would remain largely symbolic.
The foundation further urged the state government to continue its efforts to secure the inclusion of Khasi in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India.
