Tura, Dec 18: The traditional A·ba Opata ritual of the Songsarek faith of the Garo community was organised by the Hundred Drums Wangala Festival Committee (HDWFC) and performed at the Wangala A·dam in Chibragre. The A·ba Opata ritual is traditionally observed ahead of the jhum cultivation season as a mark of reverence for the land.
The ritual was conducted by Kamal (priest) Jangseng Ch. Marak of Chidaogre village in West Garo Hills district, Meghalaya, who is trained in ancestral Songsarek practices.
During the ritual, the President and Joint Secretary of the Hundred Drums Wangala Festival Committee, along with seven other individuals, were present to observe the tradition. The ceremony was performed in complete silence as the designated Kamal carried out the A·ba Opata rites in accordance with ancestral customs.
As part of customary practice, the Kamal carefully cleared a small portion of short trees and bushes, preserving the pieces of wood with restraint and care. This act symbolised deep respect for the land, reflecting the belief that the earth must first be honoured and acknowledged before cultivation begins.
Following this, the Kamal awaited guidance through dreams—a belief held among Songsarek elders that nature communicates its will during sleep. Dreams indicating favourable signs signal preparation for cultivation, while unfavourable signs call for patience and withdrawal, as the decision of the land is considered final.
The ritual was conducted under the guidance of the Hundred Drums Wangala Festival Committee of Garo Hills as part of its ongoing efforts to safeguard and preserve indigenous Songsarek traditions. It was carried out without fanfare or public display, solely to ensure that ancestral practices and knowledge are protected and passed on to future generations.
Elders present at the ritual stated that as long as the A·ba Opata tradition continues to be remembered and respected, the roots of the Garo community will remain strong, ensuring that their identity, beliefs, and ancestral heritage endure for generations to come.
