Ichamati death : Court grants seven days police custody to arrested KSU members

Shillong, April 2: The two Khasi Students Union (KSU) members arrested in connection with the deaths of two non-tribals at Ichamati have been remanded to police custody for seven days for questioning by the District and Session Court, East Khasi Hills, on Tuesday.

The two accused, identified as Shaborlang Shati (26) arrested from Wah Utim, and Mesadapbor Skhembil (26) arrested from Saitsohpen, Sohra, were allegedly involved in the incident.

On March 27, two persons were allegedly beaten to death by miscreants at Ichamati. They have been identified as (L) Esan Singh and (L) Sujit Dutta, both laborers working in limestone quarries. Their bodies were found at Ichamati and Dalda, respectively.

According to the FIR filed by family members of the deceased victims, the incident took place during an anti-CAA protest in Ichamati.

According to East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Rituraj Ravi, the two were arrested around 1:00 am on Tuesday morning. They have been taken to Sadar Police station and then produced before the court.

SP Rituraj informed that the two have been remanded to 7 days’ police custody by the District and Session Court of East Khasi Hills.

The East Khasi Hills SP also informed that the investigation is ongoing and that the police have identified more suspects involved in the case.

He added that security has been beefed up in all areas of the district, especially in Shillong and Ichamati.
