Shillong, May 30: A rapidly weakening depression over Bangladesh is expected to bring extremely heavy and exceptional rainfall to large parts of Meghalaya, according to a Special Weather Bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) at 1:00 PM today.
The depression, located approximately 260 km west-southwest of Shillong, is moving north-northeast at 18 km/h and is likely to weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area within the next 12 hours. However, its passage is set to unleash a wave of intense weather activity across the state, triggering widespread alerts.


Weather Alerts:
May 30 (Day 1)
Exceptionally Heavy Rainfall is highly likely in East Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills, East Jaintia Hills, and West Jaintia Hills.
Extremely Heavy Rainfall is also forecast for West Khasi Hills, Eastern West Khasi Hills, Ri-Bhoi, and all Garo Hills districts.
Squally winds reaching 40–50 km/h and gusts up to 60 km/h are expected across many areas.
May 31 – June 3 (Days 2–5)
The entire state will remain under heavy to very heavy rainfall alerts through the week, with thunderstorms and gusty winds (30–40 km/h) accompanying the downpour in many districts.
Flash Flood Risk:
The bulletin warns of moderate to high flash flood risk across most districts, including East and West Jaintia Hills, East and West Khasi Hills, Ri-Bhoi, and the entire Garo Hills region. Neighboring Dhubri in Assam has also been flagged for potential flooding.
Action Advisory:
The IMD has categorized the alert under its highest warning level: “Take Action.” Residents in vulnerable areas are advised to remain indoors, avoid riverbanks, and follow local disaster management instructions. Emergency services and district administrations are likely to stay on high alert as rainfall intensifies over the coming days.
