Election Commissioner inspects polling stations, reviews SIR in Meghalaya

SHILLONG, JUN 25: Election Commissioner of India Dr Vivek Joshi reviewed the state’s readiness for the ongoing Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, holding district-level meetings and inspecting polling infrastructure in Meghalaya.

During his visit to Ri Bhoi district on June 23, Dr Joshi interacted with District Election Officer, Electoral Registration Officers, Assistant Electoral Registration Officers, and other poll officials.

The review centered on implementation strategy for the SIR, with focus on training and capacity-building programmes for Booth Level Officers, EROs, and AEROs.

The Election Commissioner continued his assessment in East Khasi Hills on June 24, where he chaired a review meeting with the DEO, EROs, AEROs, and field staff to gauge progress and preparedness of the SIR exercise.

As part of the field visit, Dr Joshi inspected polling stations at Sacred Heart Boys’ Primary School, Mawlai under 15-Mawlai (ST) Assembly Constituency, and Pine Mount Polling Station under 16-East Shillong (ST) Assembly Constituency.

He examined facilities and infrastructure at both locations and discussed voter services, electoral roll-related activities, and arrangements for effective execution of the SIR programme with on-site officials.

The visit also included a tree plantation drive at the polling station premises.

Dr Joshi engaged with young prospective voters and urged them to take part in the democratic process once they attain eligibility for voter registration.

He stressed the importance of electoral participation and civic duty in strengthening democracy.
