IMD predicts thunderstorms and gusty winds in Meghalaya and Other NE Regions for three days

Shillong, April 7: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted thunderstorm and gusty wind in Meghalaya and other Northeastern states for three days, i.e., April 7 to 10.

IMD informed on Sunday that a cyclonic circulation over north Bangladesh and another cyclonic circulation over east Assam and its neighborhood persist in the lower tropospheric levels.

In a press statement, IMD stated, “Fairly widespread to widespread light/moderate rainfall/snowfall with isolated thunderstorms & lightning is very likely over Arunachal Pradesh; scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall with isolated thunderstorms, lightning & gusty winds over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Assam & Meghalaya, and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura during 7th to 10th April.”

It may be mentioned that exactly a week ago, on March 31, a cyclonic storm hit Meghalaya, affecting more than 200 people and resulting in the reported death of a three-year-old in Eastern West Khasi Hills. Over 60 houses were affected in Jirang, Ri Bhoi, while another 50 houses suffered damage in West Khasi Hills and Eastern West Khasi Hills. In Tura, West Garo Hills, several trees were uprooted, and the roofs of various houses were damaged.

Heavy rains were also being reported from other parts of the state, including the state capital, Shillong.
