Indore Honeymoon Murder: Sonam’s arrest ends mystery, Republic TV chief says “…we owe an apology to the people of Meghalaya”

Must read

Shillong, June 10: The arrest of the alleged mastermind behind the sensational murder of Indore tourist Raja Raghuvanshi, reportedly orchestrated by his newly wedded wife Sonam Raghuvanshi, has shocked the nation.

The crime, which occurred in Sohra region of Meghalaya, has captured national attention.

While the motive is yet to be fully established, the arrest of Sonam and her alleged boyfriend Raj Kushwaha, among other accomplices, has helped the Meghalaya Police make significant breakthroughs in the case. As the investigation unfolds, the confessions and statements of the accused are expected to shed light on the chilling circumstances surrounding Raja’s murder.

Tarnishing of Meghalaya’s image

Throughout the 16-day investigation, Meghalaya faced an onslaught of negative media coverage, with several national media outlets and social media users prematurely blaming the state and its people. Accusations ranged from labeling Meghalaya as crime-prone to suggesting cannibalism — a narrative many now recognize as reckless and defamatory.

Taking note of this misinformation campaign, Republic TV’s Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami issued a rare public apology in Live broadcast last night, stating:

“We owe an apology to the people of Meghalaya. We should stop calling it a ‘Meghalaya murder mystery’. The social media campaign and the entire narrative against Meghalaya and the Northeast was unfortunate. It has unfairly tarnished the image of Meghalaya and its tourism sector.”

#KudosToMeghalayaPolice trends

The successful arrest of all prime suspects has sparked a wave of support and appreciation for the Meghalaya Police. The hashtag #KudosToMeghalayaPolice, trending in Hub News platform, has seen thousands of people commend the state’s law enforcement for their professionalism and perseverance.

Many citizens have also expressed anger at the unfair portrayal of the state and are calling for the Meghalaya government to initiate defamation proceedings against certain national media outlets and individuals.

Social media users across Meghalaya and the Northeast have come forward to express both grief for the victim and pride in their police force:

Facebook comments

A’gitok S. T: This is unacceptable without defamation suits and criminal proceedings! It exposes the deep-rooted bias and ill mentality towards our region.

Nevias Neva Sg: We, the people of Meghalaya, stand with Raja’s family. May justice be served and may he rest in peace.

Mayiru Nimit Sāliyaṇṇāya: People were blaming and insulting Khasi people — calling us cannibals and criminals. This revelation is a tight slap to those narratives.

Akson Marak: Well done to the Ghazipur police team for their cooperation.

Marak Kimberline: Sonam allegedly hired a killer with her father’s help. Her father must also be investigated for inciting false narratives against the police.

Citizens have also extended gratitude to the Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh Police for their support in apprehending the suspects. The accused, including Sonam and Raj Kushwaha, are being transported to Shillong from Patna and Indore for further interrogation.

While the motive behind the murder remains to be fully disclosed, what’s certain is that this crime has deeply affected both the victim’s family and the people of Meghalaya. The case will remain in public discourse for some time, but it has also united the people in a call for justice, dignity, and truth.

As the investigation progresses, the people of Meghalaya continue to urge the rest of the country to not jump to conclusions, and instead, recognize the state for what it truly is — a place of peace, hospitality, and resilience.
