Must read

Shillong, May 26: Two tourists from Indore, Madhya Pradesh — Sonam Raghuvanshi and Raja Raghuvanshi have been reported missing for the past 24 hours while visiting Sohra.

According to police sources, their rented two-wheeler was found abandoned near Sohra Rim, and both of their mobile phones remain switched off. Multiple attempts to contact them have failed.

Local police have launched a search operation but have stated they are currently unable to confirm the duo’s whereabouts.

Govind Raghuvanshi, brother of Raja, is at Sohra Police Station and has issued a public appeal, “If anyone has any information about Sonam or Raja Raghuvanshi, we humbly request you to come forward.”

While there is still no official confirmation, authorities suspect that the pair may have ventured into high-risk areas without a certified local guide.

It is worth noting that the Office of the Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil), Sohra, had issued a comprehensive safety advisory on April 15 aimed at ensuring the well-being of visitors exploring the region’s rugged terrain during the pre-monsoon season.

The advisory urged tourists to exercise extreme caution near cliffs, water bodies, and jungles, warning of sudden river surges, strong undercurrents, hidden rocks and unstable edges that pose serious risks especially to children. Visitors were advised to stay on marked trails, wear non-slip footwear, and avoid straying into unmarked or dense areas where dangerous terrain or wildlife may be hidden.

The administration also stressed the importance of hiring certified local guides and following all warning signs and barriers, especially during the monsoon season when many areas become slippery and unsafe.

To improve safety, authorities have deployed lifeguards, installed secure railings, marked trails clearly, and ensured the availability of rescue equipment and emergency instructions at tourist sites.

In emergencies, tourists can contact Sohra Police Station (+91 76389 00103) or the Community Health Centre (+91 88373 60612).
