Dibrugarh, Oct 18: Marking the 108th anniversary of the Anglo–Kuki War (1917–1919)—referred to in British records as the Kuki Revolt or Kuki Uprising—the Assam Kuki College Professors’ Association (ASKCOPA), in collaboration with the Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO), Karbi Anglong, organised an interactive web talk on the theme “Rekindling the Spirit of the Anglo–Kuki War: Inspiring Unity, Identity, and a Shared Destiny.”

The virtual event brought together professors, researchers, community leaders, doctors, and professionals from across Assam. It was hosted by Dr. Paominthang Haokip, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics, Tinsukia College.

The session began with a heartfelt tribute to the late music icon Dr. Zubeen Garg, followed by an invocation prayer by Rev. Dr. Sehjalam Doungel. The welcome address and opening remarks were delivered by Dr. Lamkholal Doungel, President of ASKCOPA, Associate Professor and Head of Political Science at D.H.S.K. College (Autonomous), Dibrugarh, and Advisor, Kuki Inpi Assam.

In his address, Dr. Doungel emphasized the purpose of the programme—to revisit the valor, unity, and spirit of resistance embodied in the Anglo–Kuki War and to draw inspiration from it to address present-day challenges. He called on participants to channel this legacy toward strengthening cultural pride, fostering social harmony, and advancing collective development within the Kuki community.

Three eminent speakers led the discussion: Dr. Hoipi Haokip, Assistant Professor, Presidency College, Manipur; Pu L. Doungel; and Pu Thanglun Changsan, Advisor and former President of Kuki Inpi Assam. The session was moderated by Dr. Paochon Tuboi, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Sociology, S.P.P. College, Sivasagar.

Dr. Hoipi Haokip presented an insightful analysis of the pivotal role played by women during the Anglo–Kuki War. She highlighted how Kuki women served as food and ammunition transporters, acted as informants, and even assumed leadership roles as Haosapi when male chiefs were imprisoned by the British. She also discussed traditional rituals such as Chang-ai, which celebrates the diligence and contribution of women in sustaining families and communities.

“We must respect and acknowledge the contributions of women in our society,” she urged.

In his address, Pu L. Doungel shed light on the leadership and sacrifices of legendary Kuki warriors such as Pu Chengjapao and Pu Tintong, drawing parallels between their unity during wartime and the need for solidarity in the present. He urged the community to rise above sectarian divisions and focus on education and youth empowerment.

The third speaker, Pu Thanglun Changsan, discussed the contemporary challenges facing Kuki society, particularly the weakening sense of land and identity. Comparing the community’s trajectory with others, he underscored the need for historical awareness, self-governance, and community-driven development.

“Our society’s leaders and people want the government far more than our land,” he cautioned, calling for a return to the roots of self-reliance.

Following lively discussions and participant feedback, Pu Liengin Singson, President, KSO Karbi Anglong, delivered the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all speakers and attendees. The programme concluded with a closing prayer by Pu Z. Lutthang Thangeo, former Advisor and President, KSO Assam.

The interactive web talk served as a meaningful reflection on the Anglo–Kuki War’s enduring relevance—reaffirming its lessons of unity, resilience, and cultural pride for the present generation.
