Shillong, Oct 18: Six persons were arrested in connection with the recent IED seizure case at Umsning in Ri Bhoi district.
“The investigation is currently underway, and further arrests are anticipated,” deputy chief minister in-charge home Prestone Tynsong said.
He assured that the government is committed to ensuring the safety and security of the state’s residents and will not tolerate such incidents.
“We will not compromise on the safety and security of our state,” he asserted while adding “The government will take all necessary measures to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.”
The Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) has claimed responsibility for the IED seizure, alleging that it was a symbolic protest against the supposed betrayal of the indigenous community by corrupt politicians and businessmen.

Responding to these allegations, Tynsong questioned the HNLC’s claims, stating, “The HNLC needs to clarify what specific compromises have been made with the indigenous community. We, as elected representatives, are committed to serving the people and the state.”
Tynsong refrained from providing further details, citing the ongoing investigation.
“We cannot disclose more information at this stage, as it may compromise the investigation. The police will provide updates once the probe is complete.”

On October 12, a potentially catastrophic incident was averted in Umsning market when a suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was detected and diffused by the Ri Bhoi police team.
“Preliminary analysis revealed that the IED was made using 4.7 kg of gelatin as an explosive, 10 detonators, and approximately 50 iron rod pieces as splinters. All materials were seized, and necessary precautions were taken,” Ri Bhoi SP V Rathore had said.
