Shillong, Oct 18: A Shillong-based non-governmental organisation, HID Foundation, has lauded the Meghalaya Government for its sustained efforts to strengthen the education sector, while also urging the state to address long-pending teacher-related issues through clear and consistent policies.
In a statement issued by Jinysha D. Maiong, CEO of HID Foundation said that over the past two and a half years, the government has taken “visible and progressive steps” to improve the education landscape.
It highlighted major infrastructure initiatives, including the establishment of Captain Williamson Sangma State University, Shillong Government Engineering College, new science colleges and model degree colleges across multiple districts.

The Foundation further praised the introduction of Ekalavya Residential Schools, terming them a fulfilment of long-standing public aspirations to provide quality education in rural and tribal areas. It also acknowledged the government’s large-scale recruitment of teachers at the primary, upper primary and college levels.
However, the NGO cautioned that significant challenges remain.
It stressed that teacher-related grievances must be addressed as a priority and called for strong leadership and policy clarity to resolve these issues effectively.
It also noted that the Education Department—being a vast and complex system with multiple directorates and autonomous bodies requires coordinated management to ensure smooth implementation of reforms.
As a key recommendation, HID Foundation proposed the formation of a Meghalaya State Admission and Fees Regulatory Committee to ensure transparency, accountability and fairness in fee structures across educational institutions.
Expressing confidence in Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma’s leadership, the NGO said it looks forward to continued progress in the sector and urged the government to tackle teacher issues with “clear policy and decisive action.”
