International Women’s Day: Breaking barriers, building futures

Must read

March 8: The world today marks International Women’s Day, a global celebration of women’s achievements and a renewed call for gender equality. Observed annually on March 8, the day highlights the social, economic, cultural, and political contributions of women while drawing attention to the challenges that persist.

International Women’s Day has its roots in early 20th-century Labour movements and was formally recognized by the United Nations in 1977. Since then, it has grown into a powerful global movement advocating equal rights, equal pay, workplace safety, and freedom from discrimination and violence.

How are female athletes reacting to this particular day? The writer tries to find out from some of the finest female athletes.

Asian gold medalist sprinter Hima Das says “I don’t believe in a particular day for a woman to celebrate her success, after decades of social movement the struggle continues, I believe there’s still a lot to be done for the upliftment of women”.

Tokyo Olympic medalist boxer Lovlina Borgohain says” International Women’s Day means respect, strength and equality for every woman. For me it is a day to feel proud as a woman and continue inspiring the next generation. It is a reminder to support and empower girls to chase their dreams without fear”.

Former International shuttler Krishna Hazarika Rao says “I never thought I am lesser to any man. The environment I grew up in, there was always gender parity. For a society to be happy, needs the entire 100 percent (both men and women) to be happy.

Dyanchand Awardee shuttler Trupti Murugunde feels “it’s a reminder of how far we have come and how much further we still need to go. Equal opportunities, equal recognition and equal respect in sports is the need of the hour. When one of us succeeds, it opens doors for the next generation”.

World Bodybuilding championship gold medalist body builder Saya Barua feels, “it is a day to acknowledge how far we have come and fuel the fire for where we are going”.

First ever rally driver from Northeast India Phoebe Dale Nongrum’s message to every girl and women is,” never let anyone define the limits of your ambition. Your strength lies in your determination to keep moving forward”.

International Women’s Day is not only a celebration but a reminder that empowering women strengthens societies, fuels economic growth and builds a more inclusive future for all.
