Shillong, July 13: The Joint Action Committee (JAC) against Umngot on Tuesday met Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma demanding the scrapping of the on-going Umngot Hydro Power Project.
President of the JAC, Treibor Suchen pleaded that the Hydro Project will affect the local people and their mode of business, since the whole population of the area is dependent on agriculture. Umngot River is also one of the tourist attraction areas; therefore, building of the Hydro Project will affect and destroy the scenic beauty of the river.
Suchen said two months back a petition letter had been submitted to the Chief Minister on the matter via online, stating that the local people object to the construction of the Hydro Project at Umngot River. The people are opposed and will continue to oppose the construction of this Project, he added.
Meanwhile, Sangma made no promises on the demand of JAC but assured to discuss the matter with the local MLA, Lakmen Rymbui who is also the Home Minister of the State.
