Guwahati, July 5: In a significant boost to India-Japan cooperation on clean energy, Japan’s Suzuki R&D Centre India, the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and Assam-based Purabi Dairy have signed an agreement to establish the state’s first compressed biogas (CBG) plant, converting dairy and agricultural waste into renewable fuel and organic fertiliser.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in New Delhi on July 2 in the presence of Suzuki Motor Corporation President Toshihiro Suzuki and NDDB Chairman Dr Meenesh Shah. The agreement was signed by NDDB Executive Director S. Rajeev, North East Dairy and Foods Ltd. (NEDFL) Managing Director Satya Brata Bose and Suzuki R&D India Director Kenichiro Toyofuku.
NEDFL, a joint venture between the Assam government and NDDB, markets dairy products under the Purabi brand and will execute and operate the proposed CBG plant. The company will also market the compressed biogas and bio-fertilisers produced by the facility, while NDDB will provide technical and institutional support. Suzuki R&D India will invest in the project and realise the carbon benefits generated through reduced emissions.
The project is expected to transform agricultural and dairy waste into compressed biogas, a renewable fuel that can be used in vehicles and industrial applications, while also producing organic fertiliser. Besides promoting scientific waste management, the initiative aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve soil health and create an additional source of income for dairy farmers by generating value from waste.
NDDB Chairman Dr Meenesh Shah said Assam and the Northeast are already known for near-natural farming practices and the project would further strengthen sustainable agriculture while improving dairy farmers’ incomes through a circular economy approach.
Suzuki Motor Corporation President Toshihiro Suzuki said the company is already associated with nine biogas plants across India, two of which are operational in Gujarat. He said the Assam project reflects Suzuki’s commitment to supporting the governments of Japan and India in expanding biogas adoption across the country.
NEDFL Managing Director Satya Brata Bose said the project aligns with the Northeast’s focus on environmentally sustainable development and reaffirmed Purabi Dairy’s commitment to making the initiative a milestone in the journey towards a cleaner and greener future.
The proposed plant is expected to strengthen Assam’s clean energy ecosystem by integrating renewable energy production with responsible waste management while deepening India-Japan collaboration in sustainable rural development.
