Joannes Lamare seeks MHRC intervention into Jatalong Village mob violence

Shillong, April 2: Joannes JTL Lamare, a resident of East Khasi Hills district, on Saturday sought the intervention of the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) into the plight of three border residents who were injured after they were assaulted by a mob at Jatalong village in Ri Bhoi district.

In a petition to the MHRC chairman, Lamare referred to reports and said on Friday, around 6 pm, three locals namely Barnabas Lyngdoh, Seldron Mukhim and Flaming Sten of Khyndewso Village Ri Bhoi District, were passing through Jatalong village, Ri Bhoi District when a mob attacked them with such brutality that the three were seriously injured.

He said the actions that are recognized as violating the most basic human rights, such as violence endangering life, torture and physical or moral coercion, needs to be addressed at the earliest and also to render justice to the victims.

Moreover, Lamare said the attack on the 3 people is a clear violation and suppression of Human Rights and it may also lead to the loss of precious lives had the victims not fled the place of incident.

Asserting that compensation for the 3 victims also needs to be considered so as to relief them of their plight, he said this act of violence may also lead to the destruction of communal harmony and thus encourage the escalation of tension between communities residing in the adjoining areas because the areas are being inhabited by 2 or more communities.

“If there is communal unrest between the communities residing in these areas, community developmental programmes and progress cannot be carried out which is again a way that will lead to deprivation of civic amenities and thus these people cannot have access to proper ways of living,” he said.

“Therefore keeping this in mind, I have no other alternative but to humbly pray that the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission would take cognizance of this request for swift Intervention so as to prevent further escalation of the problem,” he added.
