John Leslee Sangma returns to Congress before GHADC elections

Must read

SHILLONG, NOV 19: Former legislator from South Tura John Leslee K Sangma on Wednesday rejoined the Congress ahead of the elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), slated to be held next year.

Welcoming him, Congress chief Vincent H Pala said,
“We are delighted to welcome Shri John Leslee K. Sangma back to the Congress family. His return is a powerful message to the BJP-NPP alliance, whose politics of division and neglect have pushed Garo Hills into despair. His credibility, experience, and deep connect with the people will be instrumental in reviving democratic politics in the region. The growing support for the Congress is unmistakable.”

A widely respected public representative and outspoken advocate for the rights and aspirations of the Garo Hills, Sangma had briefly associated with the United Democratic Party (UDP).

After a period of intense reflection and dialogue with community elders, supporters, and civil society voices, he has chosen to return to the Congress—
recognising it as the only political platform that continues to stand firm on democratic values and tribal rights.

Speaking to MPCC leaders, Sangma voiced grave concern over the deepening crisis in Garo Hills. He noted that the youth are facing a bleak future, with unemployment, disillusionment, and shrinking opportunities defining the current landscape.

“I have seen firsthand how our young people are suffering. The situation in Garo Hills is
deteriorating, and the government seems incapable of offering even a semblance of hope. There is urgent work to be done at the grassroots,” he stated.

He added that the Congress remains the only credible, secular, and people-centric force capable of restoring confidence, protecting tribal identity, and steering Meghalaya towards inclusive growth. He reaffirmed his commitment to rebuild the Party’s strength in South Tura and across the Garo Hills.

The MPCC said it believes that Sangma’s rejoining will reinvigorate organizational efforts in the Garo Hills and encourage more leaders and citizens disillusioned with the present dispensation to reclaim their political agency under the Congress banner.

The party also reiterates its unwavering commitment to constitutional values, tribal rights, economic empowerment, and transparent governance.

“(We) will continue to stand with the people of Meghalaya, especially in regions where the failures of the current government have been most acutely felt,”it stated.
